Wildland Fire Fighting

A fire truck is parked near a forest engulfed in flames, highlighting a serious wildfire situation.

Horseshoe 2 Fire – Southeastern Arizona, June 2011

Avra Valley Fire District has a cooperative agreement with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management to assist in fighting wildland fires anywhere in Arizona, as well as in other States as needed.  Az DFFM will in return  assist the Avra Valley Fire District in suppressing any wildland fires in our District that may require additional resources to bring them under control. Our District currently has 3 Engine Bosses on staff, each able to respond to wildland incidents with a crew of 3-4 personnel and a brush truck.  In addition to our Engine Bosses, the District has several qualified Wildland Firefighter personnel who can assist on wildland assignments.   The Avra Valley Fire District has three brush trucks,  two Type 3 engines, a Type 6 engine, as well as two tactical water tenders which can be sent out on assignments  or used for in-District wildland response.

Wildland firefighting is extremely strenuous, and firefighters can expect to encounter extreme fires, rough terrain, smoke-filled air, and long shifts. Because of these conditions, wildland firefighters must pass the work capacity test, also known as the "pack test".    This test consists of a candidate carrying a 45-pound pack or weight vest for 3 miles over flat terrain in less than 45 minutes.
